About Smith Mountain Lake

Smith Mountain Lake was completed in 1966, it has 500 miles of shoreline and contains over 20,000 acres of water. It is located 25 miles from Roanoke and about 25 miles from Lynchburg.

The purpose of the lake is the generation of electricity at Smith Mountain Dam. Smith Mountain Lake has become a premier resort and residential community with many new businesses and communities being developed every day.

The lake is the boating and recreational center of this area and is increasing becoming the premier place to live in this area. The temperature is mild year round and the taxes are low. There are a diverse group of people relocating to the lake and with this growth a variety of new businesses are flocking in raising the convenience and livability of the area. There are people from all over the world living and visiting here and makes for a unique interesting community. 

The lake boasts about 18,000 permanent residents and tens of thousands of visitors and tourists per year. Real estate prices have continued to rise and are forecasted to continue this trend, the costs of housing however is still below the national average in the area when compared to the northeast.

Fishing

Smith mountain Lake is world renowned for its fabulous year round fishing.The lake boats stripped bass, large mouth bass, crapie,bluegill, catfish and other freshwater fish. there are thousands of coves where you can fish or just hang out and never see a soul. Many record strippers have been caught here and many more are waiting for You!!

Boating

Boating is a big part of the lake, there are dozens of marinas that sell a wide variety of boats from a jon boat to a 75 foot cruiser, you can enjoy personal watercraft, runabouts, houseboats and cruisers.  There are parasail boats available as well as all types of rentals for you too!

Activities

There are many activities at  the lake for all groups and individuals. there are bridge clubs, barbershop quartets, sewing clubs, sailing regattas, ski clubs, and most of the activities you would find in any city. There is a weekly newspaper at the lake and even one stoplight! Restaurants abound, everything from pizza to gourmet restaurants, many on the water. Kids have soccor,baseball,football,t ball, etc. organized by the Franklin County Recreation dept, it's all here just in a rural beautiful setting like no where else in the world!
